Youth Outreach

The Gold Cup Youth Outreach helps spread rowing, athletics, and healthy lifestyles. We offer middle school students at St. James School in North Philadelphia a Learn-to-Row program. They meet gold and silver medalists from across the globe during the week of the Gold Cup.

Our middle school rowing program serves the under-resourced North Philadelphia community. The Gold Cup provides learn to row coaching, on-campus and at the Conshohocken Rowing Center free of charge.

Our desire is to create opportunities to young people to better compete for scholarship spots at the many private schools around the area who hold a few openings for needier children. Having some experience in a popular sport can make obtaining one of these competitive spots a little more possible. Title IX has also opened up significant scholarship dollars to young women who join crew teams.

We’ve also sent the Olympic Gold Cup athletes in to elementary schools and high schools in the area to do presentations to children. Even kids who know nothing about rowing get a kick out of asking our champions about Norway or Australia—places that seem so far away.

The Olympians also coach teams of local high school crew athletes in an ergathon, or indoor rower relay race, with the kids able to meet and hear from these inspirational elite athletes.
